One night last week, a 26-year-old Newark man under the influence of some type of drug walked into the Hawes Elementary School and asked for directions Police Chief Jacqueline Luthcke revealed Thursday.
Employees gave him directions and immediately called police, who found the stranger knocking over trash and recycling cans in the area, the chief said.
They issued him a summons at headquarters, then had him taken to New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus for treatment, she said.
"This was an incident in the evening that occurred while rec sports were in the building," Schools Supt. Dr. Daniel Fishbein said.
"A parent who happen to be district employee addressed the person and asked him to leave the building. He complied, but was acting and appeared in distress so the employee called the police," Fishbein police.
"The police responded immediately."
